I started this project about two years ago, as we were looking at our finances and trying to figure out a good way to plan for such a huge life change.  Ideas started to flow, and thoughts about things to keep track of, things we needed to learn, destinations that sounded interesting to us, and just starting to flesh out our plans.  We went from looking at monohulls to focusing on catamarans.  We visited a few boat shows and learned which brands we preferred.  We’ve watched countless hours of sailing vlogs and gleaned what we can from the experiences of others.

As a financial analyst, I’m always crunching numbers.  I developed a monthly budgeting/tracking method that keeps it simple, so its not overwhelming, but also keeps me engaged in focusing on building our savings.  Its been a tough year – we moved to a new state, switched jobs twice, sold one house and bought another, and are ready to get back to a regularly-scheduled program.  This year we have to tighten our belts considerably and start plugging away.  We have a target to meet in 2.5 years, and I truly believe using the Sail Away Journal will help us meet that target.

If you’re considering the same type of lifestyle, but can’t afford it yet, I encourage you to pre-order the Sail Away Journal and plan along with me over the course of the next 2-3 years.  We hope to see you out there someday.  Fair winds, and following seas.
